As a side project, I enjoy applying the industrial design tools to the design of logos for various projects. The process of creating a logo is very similar to that of a tangible product: the wishes of the customer need to translated into a visual representation, several iteration are needed to find a consensus, the medium (material) and production techniques need to be considered, etc. Below are some examples of logos I have designed:
Zooom
During my study at Industrial Design, I was part of a photography club which recorded activities related to the faculty and organised photography contests and workshops. According to tradition, each year the new group member came up with a new name, logo and design for crew-shirts. The inspiration for this logo were the different settings of the opening of the diaphragm in a camera (which determines the amount of light entering the camera and the field of depth of the picture). The finished logo is visible below, as is an example of a screen printed version on one of the shirts.
Ballet school Annelies Slock
When a local ballet school (http://www.balletschoolas.be/) in Aalter, Belgium, changed owner, I was commissioned to design a new logo which would reflect this fresh start. The design brief stated that the association with classical ballet should be obvious, but at the same time there was a desire for something crisp and contemporary. In order to make the logo as versatile as possible, I kept the logo a single colour and a high contrast which allows the logo to be recognisable no matter the size.
Below, some of the original sketches can be seen and the finished design which these sketches lead to.
Work-it
A student project of a relative had the goal to set up a small-scale commercial undertaking with the aim to find investors and turn a profit. The chosen product were office supplies and these needed to be recognisable. The simple but archetypical paperclip was the source of inspiration. The following images show the finished logo, seen on one of the example products, a highlight marker.
